Most people learn what they know about mental health through the media. Each year the Mental Health Association rewards contributors whose contribution is accurate, current and effective.
The criteria for the winning entries included:
Originality in approach to mental health issues
Effectiveness in educating and motivating audiences
Skill in execution
Enlightened treatment that challenges stereotypes
The design of the award is quite unique. It combines a star for Texas, and a bell which is the symbol for the mental health association. The original bell is in Virginia, and it was made from melted chains and shackles that were used (years ago) to restrain patients in mental wards.
