Carol Nowell - Managing Editor (1986-2003)

Carol Nowell served as managing editor of Wichita Falls Medicine from 1986 - 2003. In 1995, she won a media award from the Mental Health Association in Texas for her article, "Two Mended Hearts." See Featured Articles. It chronicles her struggle to overcome clinical depression after her husband underwent emergency quadruple bypass surgery. Carol has also been published in "Heartbeat" magazine. Her article "Bypass Surgery - A Wife’s View," explored the dynamics of her husband’s recovery. She was creator and editor of "The Happy Heart Herald" cardiac support group newsletter. As a member of Beta Sigma Phi, she was Valentine Sweetheart in 1982 and 1985 and, she was selected "Girl of the Year," a city-wide honor. Carol is a two time nominee to the North Texas Women’s Hall of Fame, and she was among the top fund raisers for the 1996 Muscular Dystrophy’s Celebrity Jail-A-Thon. See Jailbird Carol's photo below. She raised $952.00 for Muscular Dystrophy and wishes to thank everyone who contributed to her bail. In 2000, she participated locally in a fund raising project for St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN. She served more "jail time" at the hands of a local sorority who sponsored the event. She was able to raise over $700.00 for that charity. While vacationing in Memphis later that year, she joined a group of internet friends who helped sponsor a party for some of the little patients of St. Jude's. It was held at the Ronald McDonald house, and was an overwhelming success. She helped make gift bags for the several hundred children (and parents) who attended. In Carol's words, "it was awe inspiring to witness small children with IV's and tiny little bald heads due to chemotherapy. Sad little faces burst into big smiles when an Elvis Presley imitator performed, and once again when they received their gift bags. It was a truly humbling experience and well worth the effort."
In 2000, Carol Nowell, Managing Editor was awarded the prestigious Paul B. Ellis Award from the American Heart Association. The award was presented at the University Club in Wichita Falls. In attendance with Carol to share in the ceremony, were Dr. V.C. Saied, Editor, Dr. William Dean, and Tito Tolentino, President of the Alliance in 2000.
